Follow our timeline to see how Ashton Discount has grown over the last 55 years to become one of Greater Manchester’s leading family run independent furniture & bathroom retailers.
Although Ashton Discount is the size of a department store, it does not carry department store attitudes.
“We are a good deal more personal. Our staff are much more knowledgeable than the usual salespeople. Nor do we believe in high pressure. We never have. We like our customers to be 100 percent sure”. – Shirley – 25th Silver Anniersary – The Reporter 28/04/1989
The original family business was established in 1964 under the name “The Homemaker”. A small shop situated on Old Street in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester by Joe and Shirley, selling bathroom and kitchen fittings.
In 1967 Shirley & Joe decided that a larger premises was needed due to an increase in demand for people buying and doing up their homes, so took over the premises in St Micheal’s Square in Ashton-under-Lyne. With this move they decided a new name would suit this and decided on Ashton Discount.
By 1971, business was booming to such an extent the couple decided that something much larger was in order. Keeping the store in St Michael’s Square, they set up shop on their present site. Sadly, Joe passed away in 1981. Shirley didn’t have to carry on alone. Both their children were by now involved in the everyday running of the company. Each brought their own areas of expertise.
The biggest upheaval of all came in 1984, when the Co-op next door (Stamford Street Store) suddenly became vacant. This meant they could have everything under one roof which made life much easier. Also a warehouse also became vacant behind the current site, which meant they could hold more stock. The 1980’s brought with it lots of change, they started selling furniture, a total refurb of the Stamford Street store and also in 1989 they celebrated their 25th Silver Anniversary.
The 1990’s brought yet another refurb. This required expanding the upstairs of the showroom to make way for a new bedroom department. In 1999 they celebrated their 35th Anniversary.
The 21st Century came with yet another refurb, but also a new rebrand. With social media and the internet they decided that they would become need to become a “clicks and bricks” retailer. Shoppers now shop around and use smart phones to compare prices. With Three generations of the family now working within the company. They are one of the largest independent retailers in bathrooms and furniture in the UK.
In 2019 the company has just celebrated their 55 year anniversary. Ashton Discount are launching their new website. “Trends in home furnishing are changing rapidly, and with celebs influencing customers taste we have to try and be one step ahead”. With that being said they still believe in their core values that they started all those years ago. They are still a family run business.
